Blood Work

Cheshire Crossing Animal Hospital provides in-house blood work for dogs and cats in Columbus, Ohio, and the surrounding area. Blood tests are often recommended in healthy pets, in pets about to undergo anesthesia, and in sick pets.

In addition to physical exam findings, it may be necessary to run blood tests on your pet to help get an accurate picture of what’s going on internally. Because our clinic was built with the highest standards in mind, we have the capability to perform most of that blood testing in our lab, right here in the clinic.

When our doctors analyze the number and structure of blood cells it helps with the diagnosis and monitoring of disease and infection.

In most situations, we are able to give you results before you leave your appointment which may mean less anxiety for you and a quicker response to an illness for your pet. Being able to perform blood testing here at the clinic also means that we can respond much quicker to emergencies, should that occurrence ever arise.

How Blood Work is Useful to Veterinarians

Blood work is a basic evaluation tool that is usually a combination of a complete blood count (CBC) and a blood chemical analysis. The results of laboratory tests are compared to reference ranges from a group of normal, healthy animals of the same species.

When our doctors interpret laboratory tests we consider the entire evaluation of your pet as the results may be influenced by drugs your pet is receiving or by a recent meal. Make sure to find out if you should fast your pet before the visit in case laboratory samples are collected. We recommend that healthy pets, especially senior pets, have bloodwork performed yearly.  Early detection of a medical problem increases the likelihood of a positive outcome.
